Generative AI & AI Native Engineering Lab

Students learn how large language models behave, write prompts that hold up under real tasks, build with AI coding assistants while still reviewing what they produce, and ship a small retrieval-backed assistant over their own course notes.

Who it's for

2nd–4th year B.Tech / B.E., BCA, MCA and B.Sc CS students

Participants will be able to

  • Explain tokens, context windows and why models hallucinate
  • Use AI coding assistants to build faster, and test and review their output
  • Write structured prompts with examples, constraints and output formats
  • Call an LLM API from Python and handle errors and rate limits
  • Build a retrieval-augmented Q&A bot over a small document set
  • Evaluate answers against a checklist instead of by eye

Agenda

Adjusted to your syllabus, batch and lab setup before the dates are fixed.

  1. 01

    How language models work

    • Tokens and context
    • Sampling and temperature
    • Failure modes and hallucination
  2. 02

    Prompt patterns that hold up

    • Role, task and format
    • Few-shot examples
    • Asking for structured JSON output
  3. 03

    AI-native development

    • Coding assistants in the editor
    • Reviewing and testing AI-written code
  4. 04

    Working with an LLM API

    • API keys and quotas
    • Calling a model from Python
    • Retries and cost awareness
  5. 05

    Retrieval-augmented generation

    • Embeddings and similarity search
    • Grounding answers in sources
  6. 06

    Mini build and review

    • Team build: notes assistant
    • Evaluation checklist
    • Demo and peer feedback

What your institution receives

  • Participation certificate for every attendee
  • Lab manual with step-by-step exercises
  • Starter code repository for the mini build
  • Participation and assessment report for the department

What you'll need

  • Basic Python (variables, functions, loops)
  • A laptop per student or per pair with internet access
